Attaching an existing source to a person in Family Tree Maker

Answer ID 5407
How do I attach an existing source to a person in Family Tree Maker?

If you have a source in Family Tree Maker that provides documentation for multiple individuals in your family tree, you can attach it to as many people and facts as you wish.

  • From the Sources Workspace

  • From the People Workspace

From the Sources Workspace:

  1. From the Sources workspace, select a source group from the Source Groups list on the left.

Note: If the Source Groups panel isn’t visible you will need to click the open panel button under the Sources tab.

  5. The source is now linked to the new person. You can enter more details in the Citation detail and Citation text boxes in the right panel of Family Tree Maker.

From the People Workspace:

  1. Find the person to whom you want to add documentation either in the pedigree view of your tree or from the index of individuals on the left side of the screen.
  2. On the right side of the screen, find the fact for which the source provides documentation. When you hold your mouse over the fact or click on it, you’ll see one of two source icons directly to the left of the fact.
    • If you have not yet added a source for the fact in question, you will see the New source citation icon. Clicking it brings up the following menu:

    • If the fact in question has previously been attached to a source, you will instead see the Source citation icon. Clicking it shows the following:

  3. If you already have a citation applicable to the fact, select Use Existing Source Citation . This opens a new window with the sources listed on the left (you can view these in multiple grouping styles by selecting the appropriate option from the drop-down menu in the upper left), and existing citations for whichever source you select listed in the main area. Select the source and citation you wish to add and click either the Link to Citation or Create New Copy button.
  4. If you would rather create a new citation, select Add New Source Citation. This opens a new window from which you can select a source from a list of all sources and enter more detail in the Citation detail and Citation text fields. When you have entered all the citation details that you want, click OK to finish attaching the source.

To attach a source from the Person Tab:

  1. From the People workspace and under the Tree tab (the Family tab in some versions), select the person in your tree to whom you want to attach a source. Then click the Person tab. Now select the fact for which the source will provide documentation from the list of Individual and Shared Facts .
