We're excited to announce our upcoming new edition, FTM 2019, which will be launching this summer.  We've created this FAQ to answer common questions about the release.

Q: I'm new to Family Tree Maker, where do I find more information?

A: To learn more about Family Tree Maker in general, just go to www.familytreemaker.com, where you will find an overview of key features, an FAQ, and other helpful links.


Q: How can I pre-order FTM 2019?

A: We have a special upgrade offer available for anyone who owns a previous edition of Family Tree Maker.  If you're signed up for our newsletter and have a previous edition, you should click here for important information on how to make sure you're receiving our emails.

Please note that FTM 2019 is not currently available for pre-order for customers who are new to Family Tree Maker and haven't used a previous edition.


Q:  I have a pretty old version of Family Tree Maker. Do I still qualify for the upgrade offer?

A:  Yes! The current special offer is for all owners of all previous editions (FTM 2017 and older)  — so absolutely any edition (all the way back to version 1.0 in 1989 that came on floppy discs!) is eligible to upgrade with this offer.


Q: What is the pricing for the pre-order upgrade to FTM 2019 and the TreeVault services?

A: Please refer to the special offer page for the current pricing we have available.  One year of TreeVault Services (regularly $20) is included in the pre-sale offer free of charge.  Also note that the prices themselves are in local currencies and are meant to be closely equivalent to US pricing.


Q: If I purchase now and change my mind next week, can I get a refund?

A: Yes.  You can get a full and immediate refund on a pre-order purchase through live chat any time before FTM 2019 is released.


Q: If I accept the free year of TreeVault now, will my credit card be charged at the end of the year automatically?

A: No. Your card will not be charged unless you tell us at the end of the year when we ask you about it that you love TreeVault enough to subscribe for $1.99 a month.  No gotchas here.


Q: I've recently purchased FTM 2017 with a special offer to receive FTM 2019 as a free upgrade, is there anything I need to do?

A: Don't worry, we have your purchase recorded, and will email you information on how to pick up your free copy once we release the new edition.  This applies to those of you who took advantage of special upgrade offers we've sent out starting in late April or purchased FTM 2017 at any of our shows since RootsTech this past March.


Q: Do I need to buy a DVD or USB version, or just the download?

A: The backup DVD and USB are optional add-ons and not strictly necessary - they're useful if you prefer to install from physical media, or to have on hand to easily reinstall if you need to.  The USB also contains utilities and instructions for transferring tree files, as well as 14 GB of free space for file transfer and/or storage.


Q: I am having trouble using the store to order.  Where do I get help?

A: First follow these steps as a guide to using our online store:

  1. Click on a link to purchase in the special offer email.  This will take you to our online store, starting with a page with more information about the offer.
  2. Choose Download, DVD or USB drive.  All options come with an FTM 2017 download provided to you right after purchase, and an FTM 2019 download when it's released.  You can choose to add a DVD or USB copy of FTM 2019 for an additional charge.
  3. Browse the Gift Collection. From helpful books to a plug-in for making DNA charts, gift collection items are absolutely optional though every purchase helps keep our updates free.
  4. Order Now and get personalized download links on screen. After you fill out and submit your order form you’ll get a unique set of download links for FTM 2017 for Mac and Windows.
  5. FTM 2019 is coming soon!  Your FTM 2019 download (and DVD or USB if you added one to your order) will be fulfilled when FTM 2019 is released later this summer.

TIP: The download links will appear on the last screen and will also be sent by email.

Q: Do I need a Family Pack license?

A: Only if a) there's more than one computer in your home, AND b) there's more than one FTM 2019 user there.  So for example, if you are the only FTM 2019 user in your home, you can have it on both your desktop computer and your laptop and do not need a Family Pack license.


Q: My son was covered under our family pack when he was living at home and has now gone off to college. Is he still covered even though he is not using Family Tree Maker in our home?

A: Yes.  We make an exception for students who spend part of their year away from home at school.  They can be covered under our Family Pack license.


Q:  Can my sister who lives in another state get a copy using my Family Pack license?

A:  Unfortunately not.  The Family Pack license only covers users in your home. 


Q: Can I get a discount if I buy a copy for a relative who lives in another state?

A: Yes! As a registered Family Tree Maker user you can get a discount when you buy them a copy as a gift.  Just click the corresponding link for your country below:

Please note that gift purchases are currently only available for FTM 2017, and more information on how to make a gift purchase of FTM 2019 will be available closer to release.


Q: I already have a Family Pack license for a previous edition.  Do I need to buy a new one for FTM 2019?

A: Yes, assuming you want to install and use FTM 2019 on all of the computers in your home.


Q: Will Charting Companion and Family Book Creator be updated for FTM 2019?

A: Yes, both plugins will have updates available from their publishers when FTM 2019 is released.  For more information about the plugins, click here for Charting Companion and click here for Family Book Creator.



Q: Why would I want to upgrade to FTM 2019 from my current version?

This is a pretty big upgrade, with many new features that you may find helpful in your family history research.  For a preview of what's to come, click here.


Q: Will my old Family Tree Maker files open OK on FTM 2019?

A: Yes.  Every tree file ever made on any edition of Family Tree Maker can be opened with both FTM 2017 and FTM 2019. 


Q: When will FTM 2019 be released?

A: This summer. (Boston summer, not Sydney).


Q: When exactly is Boston summer?

A: In the US summer begins at the summer solstice (June 21) and ends at the fall equinox (Sept 23). So mid-summer is half way between those (Aug 6) and that’s why our Aug 9th newsletter says:

“It's just past mid-summer and here we are – happily right on schedule ...”


Q: So when can we expect the release?

A: As we start final beta testing, the answer is “when it’s ready”.  We don’t set a launch date until we get an “all clear” from our testers.  Based on where we are right now, we can happily narrow it down to this summer and that's really the best we can do.  So please be patient and know that you’re getting a great deal if you are taking advantage of the pre-order savings.


Q: Will FTM 2017 still sync with Ancestry after FTM 2019 is introduced?

A: Yes.  No change there.


Q: Will FTM 2017 still be supported after FTM 2019 comes out?

A: Yes.  We are already planning an update for FTM 2017 (23.3) that will provide as many of the FTM 2019 bug fixes as possible to FTM 2017 users.  We believe users should only have to upgrade if they find the new features worth the money, not to get bugfixes.


Q: What are the system requirements for FTM 2019?  Are there versions available for tablets and phones?

A: FTM 2019 is a desktop application for Windows PCs and Macs, with minimum system requirements shown below.  With this new edition, we have also created a separate FTM Connect mobile app to use in conjunction with TreeVault Cloud Services, which allows you to view your FTM 2019 anywhere, at any time.

System Requirements for Windows:

- Operating System: Windows 7 or later, including Windows 10
- Hard Disk: 900 MB available disk space
- Memory: 2 GB of RAM (4 GB recommended)
- Display: 1024 x 768 resolution
System Requirements for Mac:

- Operating System: OS X 10.10 or later, including macOS Mojave 10.14
- Hard Disk: 900 MB available disk space
- Memory: 2 GB of RAM (4 GB recommended)
- Display: 1280 x 800 screen resolution


Q: What are the system requirements for FTM Connect?

A: FTM Connect requires iOS 12 or later.  Minimum requirements for Android will be available closer to release.
