Family Tree Maker is running slowly, how can I fix this?

If Family Tree Maker is running more slowly than expected, here are a few steps you can take to increase the software's performance.

Verify you meet the minimum system requirements

If your computer doesn’t meet the minimum system requirements for Family Tree Maker, the program will not work well. As with all programs, a faster processor, more RAM, and more free disk space will enhance performance. Below you can find the minimum system requirements for Family Tree Maker 2012:

Operating System Microsoft Windows® Vista™ / Windows ® 7
Processor 500 MHz Intel Pentium® II (or equivalent)
Hard Disk 460 MB for installation
Memory 512 MB of RAM
CD-ROM Drive 2x CD-ROM (required for installation)
Monitor 800 x 600 resolution

Below are the minimum system requirements for the Family Tree Maker 2014:

Operating System Microsoft Windows Vista / Windows 7 (32 or 64 bit) / Windows 8
Processor 500 MHz Intel Pentium II (or equivalent)
Hard Disk 675 MB for installation
Memory 1 GB
CD-ROM Drive DVD Drive (required for installation)
Monitor 1024 x 768 resolution

Merging duplicate individuals or sources can reduce the overall size of your file, make your file more efficient, and often.

Disable fastfields

Disabling fastfields in large databases can also speed things up.

To disable Fastfields:

  1. Click the Tools menu and select Options.
