Recovering from a Sync Failure in FTM 2019 24.0

This article is specifically for users of FTM 2019 version 24.0 who have not yet updated to version 24.0.1 and have experienced a sync failure.  Please review each of the following topics in order:

RUN THE 24.0.1 UPDATER

If you have not yet updated to version 24.0.1 of FTM 2019, please do so.  It is a required update for anyone who syncs with Ancestry or uses the FamilySearch features, and highly recommended for better performance if you are using TreeVault cloud services.  For information on how to get the free 24.0.1 update please click here.

COMPACT YOUR TREE

We always recommend that you compact and back up your tree periodically as a general best practice.  It's also a good step to take before syncing your tree, especially after a sync failure.  Simply go to the Tools menu and select Compact File to get started, or click here for step-by-step instructions.

INITIATE SYNC AND SAVE THE SYNC CHANGE LOG

After compacting your tree, go ahead and sync your tree.  After analyzing possible changes, you should see a Sync Change Log window summarizing what changes will be made when you sync your tree.

Click on View / Print Details to open a detailed view of every addition, change or deletion that will occur if you continue the sync.  From the Report Preview you can choose to print the sync change log or save it to your computer (such as a PDF) for easy reference.

REVIEW THE SYNC CHANGE LOG

Review the printed or saved Sync Change Log you created in the previous step.

If there are any unwanted changes coming from your FTM tree, you have a few options:

  • Make note of what you would need to correct after syncing, proceed with the sync, then go back and make corrections.
  • Restore from an earlier backup and repeat the process of initiating sync, saving the sync change log, and reviewing it for changes.
  • Use the new Turn Back Time feature to go back to before those changes were made to your tree (click here for instructions).

If there are unwanted changes coming from your Ancestry tree, make note of them to correct them after syncing.

FIX RELATIONSHIP MISTAKES

If the Sync Change Log shows that there are changes from Ancestry coming down to FTM where relationships for some people are being deleted, go to each such person in the FTM tree and check Relationships to see if they are attached to their spouse and/or children properly.  If they are not properly attached, click here for instructions on how to fix the relationship mistakes.
