Compacting a file in Family Tree Maker 2014

How do I compact a file in Family Tree Maker 2014?

While it is possible to compact a file that is open in Family Tree Maker, for best results you should make sure the file is closed before you start.

1. If your tree file is open, close it by choosing Close from the File menu.

2. Choose Compact File from the Tools menu.

3. In the dialog that opens, navigate to the file you want to compact, select it, and click the Open button.

4. In the Compact File dialog that appears, select the Perform extended analysis checkbox if you want to have the tree file analyzed more deeply prior to compacting. This looks for errors and fixes them, but it may make the compacting process significantly longer..

Note: This option is only available in FTM 2014.1 and later.

5. Click the Compact button.

6. The file will be compacted. Once the process is complete, a message will appear telling you by how much the file size has been reduced. Click OK

7. Repeat steps 2–5 until the message in step 5 tells you that the file size has been reduced by 0.00%, or as close as you can get to it.
