Choosing a Status for a Couple’s Relationship

The status of a couple’s relationship is “Ongoing” by default. If necessary, you can change this status. For example, if a couple gets a divorce, you can indicate this using their relationship status.

  1. Go to the Tree tab on the People workspace and select the appropriate couple.
  2. Click the Person tab; then click the Relationships button.
  3. Select the spouse’s name. Then, in the editing panel, choose a status from the Status pop-up menu.

In FTM 2024 you can enable a setting called “Upon Death of Either Spouse: Change relationship status to Deceased"  in general preferences of your FTM 2024 to automatically change the relationship status of couples to “Deceased” when a death date is entered for either person.

  4. How to enable this setting on a Mac computer: Click on the Family Tree Maker 2024 menu on the upper panel of your Mac, select "Settings" and select the checkbox next to the option "Upon Death of Either Spouse".
  5. How to enable this setting on a Windows PC: Click on Tools, select "Options" > General tab and select the checkbox next to the option "Upon Death of Either Spouse".
