Troubleshooting importing files into Family Tree Maker

Answer ID 5233
What is a low memory import in Family Tree Maker?

Family Tree Maker 2010-2012 can import files in 2 ways. The first, or default way, is faster and requires more memory. The file that is being imported is brought into memory first, and then saved. For the majority of users, this works well without issues.

However, if you experience issues importing your file or if your file is quite large, it may be better to try a low memory import. Importing your file this way writes your file directly to the hard drive during the import process instead of keeping it in memory. This method utilizes less memory, and can take more time, but may allow you to import your file. For instructions importing your file using this method, please see the instructions below.

Low memory importing

  • Depending on the size of the file you are importing, this process can take a lot of time, often hours to finish.
  • Importing files using this method may allow you to import a file you wouldn't normally be able to import. However, even through this method, not all files can be imported, especially if the file is damaged or corrupt.

With Family Tree Maker open:

  1. Click the File menu in the upper left corner and select Import As New Tree…

  5. A window will open, stating that Low memory import has been activated. The next file you import, before closing Family Tree Maker, will use less memory to import, but the process will take longer to complete because of this. Click OK.

  6. You will be returned to the Import file screen. Please click the Continue button to begin the low memory import.

  7. This file will now be imported.

    • This process must be repeated for each file you want to import using less memory.
