How do I change the default file location for my new files in Family Tree Maker?
You are able to change the default save location in Family Tree Maker. When you change the default save location it will only affect the new files that you save in Family Tree Maker. This means that when you change the information you will need to re-import any files that you currently have open in the program to save them in the new location.
Note before beginning: When you change the default save location in the program it will mean that the files will be saved to a new location on your computer. This will mean that to find those files you will need to look in the location that you choose in the following steps to find those files on your computer. Because of this you will need to be certain that you remember the location you choose as most of the Knowledge Base articles will only refer to the default location of: C:\Users\[your_username]\Documents\Software MacKiev\Family Tree Maker
This article discusses the following:
Changing the default save location
- Open the Tools Menu and select Options from that list.
- In the Options menu on the General tab, there will be an option to change the default save location. You can click the Browse button to select the folder that you want to use as the save folder for your files.
- Once you have selected the save location you will need to click on the OK button at the bottom of the Options window. Your default save location has now been changed.
Checking if your files are saving to the new location
To see if your files are saving to your chosen location you can either create a new file, or import a file into Family Tree Maker. Once you have done this you can open the folder that you selected to save your files to, and verify that they have been saved to that location. If you are not seeing the files in the folder that you selected, please go through step 1 above to be sure that the file location shown is correct. If the location has not been changed to your chosen folder, please repeat steps 2 and 3 as well.
