Assigning a Portrait to an Individual in FTM 2017 for Windows

How do I assign a portrait to an individual in Family Tree Maker 2017 for Windows?

This article discusses the following:

Assigning a Portrait to an Individual

  1. Click the People button on the main toolbar and then click the Tree tab, shown as the Family tab in some versions. Now you may click on the name of the person for whom you would like to assign a portrait.
  2. In the editing panel on the right side of the program, right-click on the silhouette image. You will now be given two options for assigning a portrait. If the photo you want to use is already added to your tree, click Link to Existing Picture…; if you need to add the image to your tree from an image saved on your computer, click Add New Picture…
  3. Choose one of these options:
  • If you have clicked Link to Existing Picture…, the Find Media Item window will open allowing you to select an image that has already been added to your tree. Select the image you would like to assign and click OK. The new portrait will now be assigned to the individual in your tree.
  • If you have clicked Add New Picture…, the Select media item window will open. Find the image in its saved location on your computer and click Open. The new portrait will now be assigned to the individual in your tree.

Changing the Display of a Media Item

  1. Click the Media button on the main toolbar. Then click the Collection tab.
  2. Click the image of the media item you want to change the display of and then click the Detail tab.

  3. The image of the media item appears in the display area. You can move your cursor over the toolbar to display each button’s name.

  4. Use these buttons in the image toolbar to change the display:
    • Click the Rotate right button to move the image clockwise.
    • Click the Rotate left button to move the image counterclockwise.
    • Click the Size to fit button to display the entire image in the current window.
