Help finding Family Tree Maker 1-3 files

While the default location for Family Tree Maker to save files to is the Family Tree Maker folder under Documents, potentially files could be saved anywhere on your computer. Spotlight can help find your Family Tree Maker files from anywhere on your computer.

Find your files using Spotlight

1. Click the magnifying glass in the upper right corner to display the Spotlight search field.

   

2. Click in the search field and type the extension for the type of file you are searching for.

   

   • Family Tree Maker 1 & 2 regular files: .FTMM
   • Family Tree Maker 1 & 2 backup files: .FTMD
   • Family Tree Maker 3 regular files: .FTM
   • Family Tree Maker 3 backup files: .FTMB
   • Family Tree Maker 2005-16 regular files: .FTW
   • Family Tree Maker 2005-16 backup files: .FBK
   • Family Tree Maker 2005-16 compressed backup files: .FBC
   • GEDCOM files: .GED
3. Search results will display below with files of the entered type showing, if any were found.

   

You can now open these files directly, or click Show All to copy or drag them to another folder or location.
