Entering a Note from the Person Tab

  1. Click the People button on the main toolbar.

  2. Make sure the individual you want to enter a note for is displayed.
  3. Click the Person tab.

  4. Click the Notes tab (if necessary).
  5. Select either a Person note or a Research note by clicking the appropriate button in the Notes toolbar.

    Note: If you do not the full bottom panel displayed pleased select the icon to open the entire bottom panel.

  6. Enter the text you want to include for the individual. The text will automatically be saved.

Entering a Note from the Family Tab

  1. Click the People button on the main toolbar

  2. Make sure the individual you want to enter a note for is displayed.
  3. Click the Person tab.

    Note: In Family Tree Maker 2014 the Family tab was renamed to the Tree tab.

  4. Click the Notes icon underneath the person’s name in the far right panel.
  5. Select either aResearch note or a Person note by clicking the appropriate button below the main Notes icon.

  6. Enter the text you want to include for the individual in the window that appears after you make your selection. Once your note is complete click OK .

Entering a Fact Note

  1. Click the People button on the main toolbar.

  2. Make sure the individual you want to enter a note for is selected.
  3. Click the Person tab.

  4. Make sure that the fact for which you want to enter a note is selected in the list of individual and shared facts. In this example, we’ll be entering a note for a name fact.

  5. In the far right panel under the individual’s name, click the Options button and select Show Fact Notes .

  6. Enter the text you want to include for the individual. Your note will automatically be saved once you have finished.

Making a Note Private

After entering a note, click the Mark as private button. You can tell the note has been marked as private because the lock icon has a yellow box around it.

Spell Checking a Note

  1. After entering a note, click the Spell Check button.

    The Spell Check window opens and begins checking the note for spelling errors. If Family Tree Maker detects a potential spelling error, it displays the word in the Not in Dictionary field.

  2. Correct or ignore the word using the Spell Check buttons. When a dialog box tells you that the spell check is complete, click OK .

    Note: If you close the Spell Check window before the program has checked the entire note, your spell check changes will not be saved.
