How do I add foreign characters to my tree?

Note: Alternate characters have been known to cause some issues when transferring trees between Ancestry.com and Family Tree Maker. It has also been known to cause issues with the relationship calculator. If you experience any of these problems please remove the alternate letters from your tree.

 

Opening the Character Map

Windows 8

  1. Open your Start screen by clicking on the Windows logo in the bottom left corner of your screen.
  2. Begin typing “Character Map”. When you start typing, your computer will automatically bring up a search menu.
  3. Click on the Character Map option from the search.

  4. The Character Map tool will open.

 

Windows Vista or 7

  1. Click on the Start menu.
  2. Type charmap into the search field and press Enter.

Using the Character Map Tool

  1. Locate and click on the first letter that you would like to use. The character will be highlighted in a display window.
  2. Click the Select button to add the character to you Characters to copy window.
  3. Repeat steps 4 and 5 until you have spelled out the word or name that you would like.
  4. When you have finished entering the word or characters that you would like, click on the Copy button.

  5. Select the location in Family Tree Maker or Ancestry.com that you would like to add the characters.
  6. Press the Ctrl and V buttons at the same time to paste your information.
