What is the Microsoft .NET framework, and why do I need it?

The .NET framework is a platform for building applications. Many programs, including Family Tree Maker, rely on the .NET framework; it must be installed and functioning correctly for these applications to run.

How do I check if the .NET framework is installed?

Windows XP & Vista

  1. Click the Start menu in the bottom left corner of your screen, and select Control Panel from the right.
  2. Open Add or Remove Programs (Vista: Programs & Features. This opens a window with all programs you have installed on your computer listed in alphabetical order.
  3. Scroll down in this window to the M’s and look for Microsoft .NET framework. .NET Framework 4.0 or above is required to run Family Tree Maker 2012 and 2014.

Windows 7

  1. Click the Start button and select the Search program and files dialog box.
  2. Enter appwiz.cpl into the search box and press the Enter key to open the Programs and features window.
  3. Scroll down in this window to the M's and look for Microsoft .NET framework. .Net Framework 4.0 or above is required to run Family Tree Maker 2012 and 2014.

Where can I download the .NET framework?

The latest version of .Net Framework available for your operating system can be obtained via Windows Update. If you need to install a specific version of the .NET Framework, please use the links below.

How do I reinstall the .NET framework?

Reinstalling the .NET framework can resolve issues with Family Tree Maker not loading or crashing. After uninstalling Family Tree Maker, please follow the instructions from the Microsoft help article below to uninstall and reinstall the .NET frameworks for the version of Windows you are using.

Windows XP, Vista & 7

  1. From the desktop, press the Windows logo key + R to open the Run dialog window.
  2. Enter appwiz.cpl into the search box and press the Enter key to open the Programs and features window (Add or Remove Programs for Windows XP).
  3. Uninstall each version of .NET Framework in your list of installed programs.
  4. Once all versions have been removed, restart your computer.
  5. Reinstall the .NET Framework using the links provided above.
