What is the difference between 32-bit and 64-bit?

Family Tree Maker 2014 the first release to come with a 64-bit edition. The terms 32-bit and 64-bit refer to the way a computer's processor (CPU) handles information. 64-bit programs handle large amounts of memory (RAM) more effectively than a 32-bit system.

In order to use the 64-bit edition of Family Tree Maker, you must have a 64-bit processor as well as a 64-bit version of Windows. How can I tell if I am running the 64-bit version of Family Tree Maker 2014?

  1. While holding the CTRL & SHIFT keys on your keyboard, press the Esc key to open the Task Manager.
  2. From the Task Manager, select the Processes tab and locate the process labeled FTM.exe. If Family Tree Maker is running as a 32-bit application a *32 will be listed directly to the right of the process. If the 64-bit version is installed, the *32 will not be displayed.

    Note: The 32-bit edition of Family Tree Maker is installed to the Program Files (x86) folder while the 64-bit edition is installed to Program files. This is another good way to determine which version you have installed.

Switching between the 32-bit and 64-bit editions of Family Tree Maker

If you have the 64-bit edition of Family Tree Maker installed and wish to install the 32-bit edition or vice-versa, you can do so by completing the steps outlined below. Please note that you must have Family Tree Maker installed in order to complete this process.

  1. Insert the Family Tree Maker installation disc into your computer’s CD/DVD drive. An automatic installer will launch. If you downloaded Family Tree Maker from the internet, you can run start the installation by double-clicking the setup file on your computer.
  2. After the preparing installation phase has completed, select Repair Application and click Next on the InstallAware wizard.

  3. Click Next on the License Agreement and Customer Experience Improvement Program panes.

    Note: If you do not wish to participate in the Improvement Program, make sure to place the radio button next to No, I do not want to participate…

  4. Once you reach the Setup Type pane, you will have the option to choose between 64-bit or 32-bit. Place the radio button next to the version of your choosing and complete the rest of the installation as normal.
