Create, download, or import a new tree with Family Tree Maker 2010 & 2011

 
How do I create, import, or download a new tree with Family Tree Maker 2010 & 2011?
 
Open Family Tree Maker. The Plan tab should be highlighted. Click on the New Tree tab to create a new tree.
  1. Do one of these options:
    • If you don't already have a genealogy file you want to use, you can create one by entering a few basic facts about your family; click Enter what you know. Enter your name and birth date and place in the appropriate fields

    • If you have a genealogy file you'd like to use to start your tree, you can import it into Family Tree Maker; click Import a tree from a existing file. Click Browse to locate the file and then click Open

    • If you have a tree on Ancestry you’d like to use to start your tree, Click Download a tree from Ancestry. If the tree you want to download isn’t ready for importing, you’ll need to first click on Export. Otherwise, click on the Download button.

    • After your file is downloaded you will be asked if you would like to import the file as a new tree or merge it with an existing tree.
    • Click Import to save the file as a new tree; click Merge to merge the file with an existing tree.
    • If you select to merge the file, the Merge Wizard will open. If you chose to import the file you can continue with the following steps.
    • You may experience issues downloading your tree if the name on Ancestry contains any characters that can’t be used for filenames in Windows. These characters are as follows: \ / : * ? " < > |. Please rename your tree on Ancestry without these characters, and try downloading your tree again. 
  2. Enter a name for the file in the New tree name field.
  3. Click Continue. The tree opens to the People workspace. You can start adding information about your family or update your old file now.
