Fixing Relationship Mistakes in FTM 2017-2019

How do I fix relationship mistakes in FTM 2017-2019?

In Family Tree Maker, you may find later that a spouse you previously entered really was married to a different person or that a child really belonged to a different set of parents. You can easily fix relationship mistakes in your tree by detaching and reattaching individuals in your tree.

Please see the following topics related to fixing relationships in your tree:

Checking for Detached People Using the Kinship Report and Extended Family Chart

There are two methods you can use to check to see if there are people in your tree that are accidentally detached from their family members.  Both can be found in the Publish workspace - the Kinship Report and the Extended Family Chart.

Using the Kinship Report

  1. In the Publish workspace, click on the Relationship Reports category under Publication Types on the left, then double-click on the icon for Kinship Report.

  2. The Kinship Report automatically generates starting from the person you currently have selected in your tree.  To change the person selected, click on someone else in the branch of your tree shown at the top of the screen, or click on the Index of Individuals button to quickly choose from a list.

  3. Under Kinship Report Options on the right, select the radio button to include All individuals and check the box to Show unrelated individuals.

  4. The report will now show a list of every person in your tree, and how they are related to the person you have currently selected.  Any individual who is completely disconnected from the tree will show a blank under Relationship in the report.  If you check the box to Sort individuals by kinship these individuals will be sorted together at the end of the report.  These are people in your tree you would want to check to see if they should be reattached to other people in your tree.

Using the Extended Family Chart

  1. In the Publish workspace, click on the Charts category under Publication Types on the left, then double-click on the icon for Extended Family Chart.

  2. The Extended Family Chart automatically generates starting from the person you currently have selected in your tree.  To change the person selected, click on someone else in the branch of your tree shown at the top of the screen, or click on the Index of Individuals button to quickly choose from a list.

  3. Under Extended Family Chart Options on the right, check the box to Include all individuals.

  4. The chart will now show the entire family tree, including all people you have in it.  Any individuals in your tree who are completely detached, or are detached in a smaller family unit, will show separately from the rest of your tree, with no lines connecting them.  These are people in your tree you would want to check to see if they should be reattached to other people in your tree.
