Changing the default file location for new files in Family Tree Maker for Mac

Answer ID 5494
How do I change the default file location for new files in Family Tree Maker for Mac?

You can change the default location where your files are saved in Family Tree Maker. Keep in mind, when you change this default location it will only affect the new files that you save in Family Tree Maker. This means that when you change the information you will need to re-import any files that you currently have open in the program to save them in the new location.

Note: When you change the default save location within Family Tree Maker the files will be saved to a new location on your computer. To find those files in the future, you'll need to look in the location that you choose in the following steps.

This article discusses the following:

Changing the default save location

  1. Open the Family Tree Maker Menu and select Preferences from that list.

  2. In the options menu on the General tab, there will be an option to change the Default Location for New Tree File. You can click the Choose… option to select the folder that you want to use as the save folder for your files.

  3. Once you have selected the save location, you can close the preferences window. Your default save location has now been changed.

Making sure your files are saving to the new location

To ensure your files are saving to the right location you can either create a new file or import a file into Family Tree Maker. Once you have done this, open the folder you chose to save your files to, and verify they did in fact save to that location. If you are not seeing the files in the folder that you selected go through step 1 above to be sure that the file location shown is correct. If the location has not been changed to your chosen folder, please go through steps 2 and 3 as well.
