Finding Family Tree Maker Files in Windows

How do I find my Family Tree Maker files?

For help finding your Family Tree Maker file, please see the correct section for the version of Windows you are using.

Windows Vista or 7
  1. Click the Windows icon on your taskbar and click the Search programs and files field to place your cursor there

  2. Enter one of the following extensions into the All or part of the file name: field
    • For FTM 2008-2017 regular files: *.FTM
    • For FTM 2008-2017 backup files: *.FTMB
    • For FTM 2005-16 regular files: *.FTW
    • For FTM 2005-16 backup files: *.FBK
    • For FTM 2005-16 compressed backup files: *.FBC

  3. Search will start automatically looking for files. Files that are found will be displayed above

You can now open these files directly, copy them, or drag them to another folder or location.

Windows 8

  1. From the start screen or desktop, press Windows logo key + Q to open the App search window.

  2. Click on the Files icon.
  3. Enter one of the following extensions into the All or part of the file name field.
    • For FTM 2008-2017 regular files: *.FTM
    • For FTM 2008-2017 backup files: *.FTMB
    • For FTM 2005-16 regular files: *.FTW
    • For FTM 2005-16 backup files: *.FBK
    • For FTM 2005-16 compressed backup files: *.FBC
  4. Search will start automatically looking for files. Files that are found will be displayed below.

You can now open these files directly, copy them, or drag them to another folder or location.

Windows 10

  1. Click the search box on your taskbar next to the Windows button.

  2. Enter one of the following extensions into the Type here to search field:
    • For FTM 2008-2017 regular files: *.FTM
    • For FTM 2008-2017 backup files: *.FTMB
    • For FTM 2005-16 regular files: *.FTW
    • For FTM 2005-16 backup files: *.FBK
    • For FTM 2005-16 compressed backup files: *.FBC
       
  3. Search will automatically start looking for files. Files that are found will be displayed above the search field, as well as other search options to help you find what you're looking for more easily (for example, clicking Documents should filter in results found in the Documents folder on your computer, where FTM tree files are stored by default).

You can now open these files directly, or right-click them and select Open file location to find them in Explorer.  From there you can copy them or move them to another folder or location.
