Moving files from FTM 2008-2011 to a new PC with FTM 2014.1

How do I move from Family Tree Maker 2008-2011 to a new PC with Family Tree Maker 2014.1?

Follow the steps below to migrate your tree safely.

Step 1. Backing up a file in your old version of Family Tree Maker

1. In your old version of Family Tree Maker, open the tree you want to move and choose Backup from the File menu.

2. Choose a location for saving your backup file. Click Removable media if you want to save it to a USB flash drive or other removable media.

3.  Make sure the Include media files checkbox is selected if you want to include your photos and other media.

4. Click OK. A message tells you when the file has been backed up successfully. A backup file with the .ftmb extension will be saved to the location you specified.

Step 2. Restoring a file from a backup in Family Tree Maker 2014.1

1. On your new PC, open Family Tree Maker 2014.1 and choose Import as New Tree from the File menu.

2. In the Choose File to Import window, go to the location of the backup file, select it, and then click Open

3. In the New File Format dialog, select the “Retain this file as it is and convert a copy” checkbox and click Convert Copy. (You can leave the checkbox deselected, but you will no longer be able to open the file in earlier versions of FTM.)

4. In the dialog that opens next, enter a name for the converted file, choose a location, and click Save.
