Technical Change Document – Version 23.2

WHAT'S IN THE VERSION 23.2 UPDATE

CONTENTS:

Version 23.2 (build 540) - Windows

Version 23.2 (build 540) - Mac

VERSION 23.2.0.540

WINDOWS

WEB SEARCH

New Windows Embedded Browser

We have used components from the Chromium Emedded Framework (CEF) to create a new, secure custom browser to replace the obsolete (and now unsupported) IE 11 embedded browser in the Web Search workspace. This eliminates serious compatibility issues with Ancestry.com and FamilySearch.org, and provides noticeably faster Web search performance.  (Note: The Mac edition will continue to use the Apple WebKit Safari framework.)

Ancestry and FamilySearch Search Result Improvements

Faster browsing of search results.  Ancestry media is no longer cached in the background while searching.  Instead, media is downloaded during the Web Merge process, resulting in smoother, faster browsing of Ancestry search results.

Fixed Issues with Categories, Sub-categories and Collections lists.  Issues with Categories, Sub-categories and lists of Collections used for navigation in Ancestry web search results have been resolved, and they should now display and function properly.

Blank list of search results fixed.  A problem where a blank list of Ancestry Web Search results is shown when Family Trees are included in search parameters has been fixed.

‘File Not Found’ error fixed.  An error message no longer appears when you attempt to view the Person details for a FamilySearch result in the Web Search workspace.

SYNC

Sync Reliability Improvements.  We continue to make the sync process more forgiving of imperfect trees, and to close sync errors reported by users through the Sync Error Report mechanism.

Duplicates Issue Fixed.  We have worked with Ancestry to solve the issue of duplicates being created when there is a sync failure.

HTML media issues fixed.  It is no longer necessary to use the “FTM Media File Adjuster” utility which we created as a temporary workaround for the issue where unsyncable HTML media kept appearing in each sync attempt.

Sync Weather accuracy improved.  Weather status is updated more frequently, fixing an issue where the main screen weather badge status wasn’t always the same as the icon on the weather report window that appears when a sync is initiated.

OTHER FIXES

Merging Trees  An issue has been fixed that appeared when using the "Add individuals without merging" option, as well as some problems with lost tasks, task categories, "private" attributes for facts, and notes in some specific cases.

Migration Path in Places Workspace  Migration Path creation stability issues have been fixed, as well as issues where the map did not reflect the correct results of searching by place name..

Source Media  A problem has been fixed where unrelated media appeared in a person’s editing panel after adding source media to the relationship fact of another person, and another where a media item linked via source citations of shared facts was not displayed in the Media tab on the People workspace.

VERSION 23.1 UPDATES INCLUDED

All of the updates in version 23.1 have been included in the 23.2 update.

VERSION 23.1 (build 480) - BOTH WINDOWS AND MAC

NEW FEATURES

Sync Progress Info

The Sync, Upload, and Download dialogs have been updated to display the changing count status so the user can see that progress is being made, and what stage the process is in. For example, the number of people uploaded out of the total to be uploaded might be displayed to help the user better understand what is taking place at that point.

Sync Weather at a Glance

A weather status badge has been added to the Ancestry Sync icon on the main toolbar and in the Current Tree area. The badge allows you to know whether it's a good time to sync without having to start the sync process first.

More Colors in More Lists

Color coding indicators now appear in people lists in the Places, Media, and Sources workspaces in addition to the Index of Individuals in the People workspace.  Additionally, all eight colors can now be shown in all lists, rather than the previous limit of three colors. The Color column may need to be resized for the additional colors to appear.

Exporting Saved Lists

Saved lists can now be selected in the Export window and exported as separate trees.

Navigation from Facts to Places

A navigation button to the place in the Places workspace was added next to the Place fields in the Information panel in the Tree tab of the People workspace.

Background Colors in the People Workspace

Changing the background color in the People workspace is now possible thanks to the new control implemented in the tree view toolbar.

Matching PDF Companion Guide to v 23.1

The PDF Companion Guide that can be reached from the Help menu has been updated for version 23.1 functionality.  Also, the PDF is now in full color on both platforms (the previous Windows guide was in black and white).

IMPROVEMENTS

A great many improvements have been made in this update with a focus on sync reliability, better performance and stability.

Sync Reliability
Great improvements were made towards more consistently reliable syncing, even with imperfect trees that previously could not be synced.

Web Merge
The merging of data from Ancestry and FamilySearch Web Search results is now more solid, even for problematic trees.

Performance
The application is significantly faster and nimbler throughout, and is particularly noticeable in large trees when syncing, merging Web Search results, and navigating after applying color coding.

Stability
While FTM 2017 was already remarkably stable, new systems have been implemented for preventing crashes, even when the application encounters interruptions, corrupted images, and other rogue elements.
