ABOUT THE 23.3 UPDATE
The version 23.3 update (build 570) is strongly recommended for all FTM 2017 users as a required update. It provides a large number of improvements that were developed for the FTM 2019 release, including the solution to the current Orange Sync Weather and updates to FamilySearch and Ancestry-connected features such as sync, hints and web search. A free 23.3 updater that requires an earlier version of FTM 2017 installed (23.0, 23.1 or 23.2) can be downloaded from our Update Center.
SHOULD I GET THIS UPDATE?
This update is REQUIRED for all users of FTM 2017. It contains important updates for:
- Data Security (same as built into FTM 2019)
- Compatibility with Ancestry and Family Search
- Enabling a return to green sync weather
- Important fixes (as many of those made in FTM 2019 as we could)

BEFORE YOU UPDATE
- Make sure FTM 2017 is installed. The updater will look for FTM 2017 version 23.0 (build 343), 23.1 (build 480) or 23.2 (build 540) before running. Click here if you need a replacement copy.
- Compact and Back up your trees. If you have not already done so, compact your trees (Tools>Compact File) and make manual backups (File>Backup, making sure the Media and Restore Sync boxes are checked). If you need detailed instructions, you will find them here:
GETTING THE UPDATER
You can download the 23.3 updater for free from our Update Center. Note that you will need to RUN the updater after downloading (See Running the 23.3 Updater, below).

RUNNING THE 23.3 UPDATER
After downloading the 23.3 updater file from the Update Center, you need to run it to update your copy of FTM 2017. In most cases that means simply following on-screen instructions, or double-clicking the updater file if no instructions appear.

Tips:
- Make sure you have run the updater. (It’s not enough to just download it).
- Check to see if your copy has been updated to build 570. (Check the About box.)

UPDATING
Q: How can I tell if the update was successful?
A: Check that build 570 appears in the About box by selecting “About Family Tree Maker” from the Help menu (on Windows) or the Family Tree Maker 2017 menu (on Mac).
Q: After downloading, the About box still shows an older build. What to do?
A: After you download the updater file, you still need to run it to update your copy of FTM 2017 to version 23.3. If on screen instructions do not appear, try double-clicking the file you downloaded.
Q: I downloaded the updater but can't find it. What should I be looking for?
A: Here are the file names and file sizes:
Windows
File name: FTM2017Update.exe
Size: 237,015,488 bytes (237 MB on disk)
Mac
File name: FTM2017Update.dmg
Size: 278,662,710 bytes (278.7 MB on disk)
Q: Not all my trees are listed in the Plan workspace after updating. What to do?
A: Open the trees that are not listed one by one to add them back again (File->Open).
PLUGINS
Q: Charting Companion is not working after the update. What to do?
A: Charting Companion 7 users may need to download the latest version (7.2.16), and in some cases may need to reinstall the plugin after applying the 23.3 update. For Charting Companion 7 and Charting Companion 6 troubleshooting information please click here.
Q: Do I need to do anything to get Family Book Creator to work in FTM 2017 after the update?
A: Family Book Creator should continue to show up in Plugins as usual after applying the 23.3 update. However, if you run into any problems, try reinstalling the plugin. Click here for more information.
OTHER QUESTIONS
Q: What if I had sync errors using FTM 2017 version 23.2 or earlier?
