FTM 2019 ROLLOUT UPDATE
October 7, 2019

MAILINGS RESUME
After taking the weekend off at FamilySearch's request, we happily resumed mailing out notifications today. We are carefully monitoring the results and working together to increase the number of mailings as fast as we safely can.

FAMILY SEARCH OPTIMIZATION IN PROGRESS
FamilySearch engineers made some modifications on their side today to accommodate more of our users. We are working on improvements from our side too. In the interim, you can help spread out traffic during the rollout by trying to avoid working with FamilySearch hints from 10am to 2pm Utah time (4pm to 8pm UTC time).

MAC OS CATALINA ARRIVES
Apple released MacOS 10.15 Catalina a few hours ago. FTM 2019 is, as you would expect, completely compatible. And FTM 2017 will be soon with the free version 23.3 update later this month. For details and info on compatibility for older editions, go to support.familytreemaker.com and enter “Catalina” in the search field.

TREEVAULT SERVERS MERRILY ROLL ALONG
The TreeVault servers continue to hold up brilliantly, even with the additional traffic from the our first mobile app, Family Tree Maker Connect app for iPad, iPhone and iPod Touch. And it looks like our new FTM 2019 users are enjoying the TreeVault cloud services -- more than 80% have already activated their TreeVault accounts and started using the new cloud services. Very cool.

FIRST WEEK - MAILINGS ON PACE
We have sent out an additional 15,000 mails bringing the total to 60,000 so far in the first six days, an average of 10,000 a day as planned. And believe it or not we are still in mid-May pre-orders. We will continue to invite users to pick up their copies as quickly as the new edition’s systems will safely allow - exactly in the order that pre-orders were received.

FAMILYSEARCH FEATURES ARE OVERWHELMINGLY POPULAR
Literally. The first group of FTM 2019 users are enjoying the new FamilySearch features so much that the traffic on FamilySearch’s servers has spiked to four times the usual levels, pushing their system right up to its limits. We met today with FamilySearch engineers and management and they have asked that we hold off sending more notifications this weekend while our engineers and theirs work to safely accommodate more users. As you know, we'd sure hoped to get everyone on board by Sunday, but that plan's on hold now for a few days. We hope to get the ball rolling again early next week and will keep you posted.

NOT YOUR USUAL ORANGE WEATHER

The current Orange status is unique and for most users it’s still quite safe to sync. We’ve set the status to Orange manually in both FTM 2017 and FTM 2019, not because of the usual interruptions in connections with Ancestry, but to alert all users NOT to sync a second time if they have a sync failure — that’s what causes problems with the new condition we are working with Ancestry engineers to fix. Actually, it’s pretty unlikely that you’ll have a problem syncing, especially if you were syncing just fine before the status turned Orange. If you’d like to try some careful syncing, compact first and make a full backup (File>Backup). Then if you get a sync failure, just restore your backup and don’t sync again until the weather’s back to green.

Next update Monday.

Q: How can I learn to use the new features of FTM 2019?

A: There is a new Companion Guide in PDF form in the Help menu within FTM 2019. We’ve added a special symbol to identify new features and enhancements in this edition so you can spot them right away. We will also post more information here on our support site.

Q: Will there be a printed book version of the new Companion Guide and will it be available in a spiral version?

A: Yes and yes. Sometime before the end of the year. You are able to pre-order a copy at a discount when you pick up your copy of FTM 2019 at the Upgrade Center.
