Internet Explorer 11 Notice on FamilySearch through Web Search

Answer ID 345737

While using Web Search in Family Tree Maker 2017, you may encounter the following message if you go to the familysearch.org website:

"We notice you are using Internet Explorer 11. We would like to encourage you to upgrade to a more current browser. FamilySearch will no longer support your current browser, starting on February 1, 2018. Read instructions on how to install a new browser."

Here is an example of what it may look like:

If you click on the link "Read instructions" within that message, you get to a page with links to download updated browsers.  However, following these instructions will not affect Web Search in FTM 2017 whatsoever - this is for when you are using FamilySearch outside of FTM, within a web browser.

FTM uses components of the version of Microsoft Internet Explorer that is installed on your Windows computer, which is why FamilySearch recognizes it as IE11 in Web Search. You are safe to continue using FamilySearch through Web Search in FTM, and if you choose to click the X in the upper-right corner, the banner will disappear and should not appear again.  We are working with FamilySearch engineers to clarify possible changes in Web Search for after Feb 1.
